Laser Hair Removal: What to Realistically Expect

Laser hair removal is one of the most misunderstood treatments we offer — primarily because the marketing around it overpromises. Here is what the science actually says, and what you should realistically expect.

How it works

Laser energy targets melanin — the pigment in the hair shaft. The heat travels down the shaft to the follicle, disrupting the growth mechanism. This only works on follicles in their active growth phase (anagen). Because only 15-30% of follicles are in this phase at any given time, multiple sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart are required to treat the full follicle population.

How many sessions?

The honest range is 6-10 sessions for most body areas. Some patients achieve 90%+ permanent reduction in 6 sessions. Others with hormonal factors or coarser hair may need ongoing maintenance. Any clinic promising "permanent removal in 3 sessions" is overselling.

Who is the ideal candidate?

The best results historically came from patients with dark hair and light skin — high contrast between melanin in the hair versus the surrounding skin. Modern laser technology (particularly the Nd:YAG wavelength we use at Lumina) has significantly improved safety and efficacy for darker skin tones. Blonde, red, grey, and white hair responds poorly regardless of skin tone, because the laser targets melanin that isn't present in sufficient concentration.

Pre and post-treatment protocols

Before: Shave the area 24 hours before your session. Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading for 4-6 weeks prior — these remove the follicle the laser needs to target. Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment.

After: Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks post-treatment. Apply SPF 30+ to treated areas. Redness for 24-48 hours is normal. Do not shave for 1 week after.

Managing expectations

The goal is permanent reduction — typically 70-95% — not guaranteed 100% elimination. Most patients find the result sufficient to eliminate the need for regular waxing or shaving. Some fine or light hairs may persist and require occasional touch-ups 1-2 times per year.
